Introduction to Gambling & Co-occurring Disorders (Fall 2024)

This training counts toward the MA PGS Certificate Core Competency Coursework.
This training will provide participants with an overview of behavioral health concerns that commonly co-occur with Gambling Disorder. After a brief introduction to gambling and Gambling Disorder, participants will learn about the Syndrome Model of Addiction, which conceptualizes similarities between behavioral and substance addictions. Then, we will discuss pathways between problem gambling and other behavioral health concerns, including the Pathways Model of problem gambling, and review the research on common comorbidities and their relationship with problem gambling. Participants will leave with an understanding of how gambling can contribute to various behavioral health concerns and vice versa. This training is interactive. We expect participants to come to the training prepared to engage in creative discussion, ideally with cameras on and microphones functioning. You must stay the full length of the training to receive CE credit.

Instructor Bios:
Instructor #1:Dr. Heather Gray is the Director of Academic Affairs at the Division on Addiction, Cambridge Health Alliance, and an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gray leads the Division on Addiction’s efforts to develop and implement the Massachusetts Technical Assistance Center for Problem Gambling Treatment, or M-TAC. In addition, she and her colleagues conduct original research, including research regarding the link between problem gambling and self-harm. In this training, she will share some of the results of those studies.
Instructor #2: Elizabeth Bice, BA; Program Associate for the Massachusetts Technical Assistance Center for Problem Gambling Treatment and Program Coordinator at Health Resources in Action. Ms. Bice has developed and facilitated online training on a variety of topics pertaining to Gambling Disorder for Massachusetts social workers, mental health and addiction specialists, and healthcare specialists.
Instructor #3: Maya A. Williams earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the illustrious Clark Atlanta University, a historically black college and university (HBCU) located in Atlanta, Georgia. Maya then sought to earn her master’s degree in clinical psychology and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Maya is a licensed mental health counselor and is certified as a Problem Gambling Specialist, Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist (CCTP), ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP), and Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP). Maya is an independently contracted Clinical Therapist at Sondermind and a Clinical Therapist and Consultant at Wellness for Our Future, LLC, a black and woman-owned group practice located in Randolph, MA.
